Sassy Park plays with the history of domestic ceramics exploring ideas of vulnerability and fragility through scale, intimacy and humour. The ceramic surface becomes a place for commentary on which she paints, writes and draws as a way of memorialising the small stages of life and the intimacies of the everyday.
I have confidence in sunshine explores intertwined themes of gender, confidence and domestic spaces in response to the Lindsay family of artists from Creswick. Through playful arrangements of painted ceramics, Park unpacks the identities of Rose Lindsay, wife of Norman Lindsay, and Ruby Lindsay, an artist in her own right and sibling to artists Percy, Lionel, Norman and Daryl. Park ruminates on whether these women were as confident as their male compatriots appeared to be and imagines their experiences as women living among their brothers, husbands and bohemian friends in Creswick, Melbourne, the Blue Mountains and beyond.
